WASHINGTON (Reuters). The U.S. Commerce Department announced Friday that it will ground 100 aircrafts which have flown to Russia in violation of U.S. export restrictions. This includes a plane owned by Roman Abramovich.

According to Reuters, the list includes 99 Boeing (NYSE) planes that are operated by Russian passengers and cargo carriers, including Aeroflot. Utair. Nordwind. Azur Air. Aviastar-TU. The Russian Gulfstream G650 could also be included.

According to the Commerce Department, it will notify companies around the globe that any maintenance, repairs, or refuelling of spare parts or services that violate U.S. Export Controls could result in U.S. enforcement action that can include substantial jail time, fines and loss of export privileges or other restrictions.

According to the Department, this means that “international flights from Russia are now effectively grounded”

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimando said in a statement to Reuters the department is “publishing this list to put the world on notice—we will not allow Russian and Belarusian companies and oligarchs to travel with impunity in violation of our laws.”

Most international Russian flights were cancelled after the United States, Canada, and many other European countries banned Russian planes in their airspace.

These rules are applicable to all U.S. made aircraft and any U.S.-origin-controlled content. They also apply to Russian-made items that have been reexported after new restrictions on Russia’s aviation-related products were in effect from February 24.

Deputy Commerce Secretary Don Graves said in a statement the series of U.S. actions “have isolated Russia and Belarus from the global economy, and I hope that today’s action brings that fact home to the Russian businesses and oligarchs that seek to continue their operations.”

Reuters reports that Russian airlines will have several weeks to arrange alternative supply of prohibited aircraft parts, or ground jets in order to avoid safety fears as a result of Western sanctions on Russia’s invasion Ukraine.
