REUTERS/Aly SohnSHANGHAI (Reuters – China’s financial capital of Shanghai recorded a record daily increase in COVID-19 infected people on Monday. Officials scrambled for residents to be tested and the Omicron variant reined in, closing down its Disney resort until further notice.
Shanghai, which was relatively unaffected by the coronavirus in recent weeks, reported 24 domestically transmitted COVID (coronavirus) cases that had been confirmed as having symptoms on Sunday. The official data for Monday showed that 734 local symptoms were also present.
This is Shanghai’s fourth consecutive day of increasing local asymptomatic infection rates.
Even though the number of cases is small, Shanghai quickly adopted China’s “dynamic clearing” policy, closing schools and testing residences to stop the virus spreading.
Also, Shanghai Disney Resort will be closed from Monday through further notice.
Wu Jinglei, city health official, said that “when it comes to all the situation of epidemic control prevention that we face, it is very complicated and serious and it also is a very large test for us.”
Wu said that Shanghai would continue to adhere to “dynamic clearance”, adding that he hopes for public support.
There were some signs of dissatisfaction with the District-by-District approach.
A user from China’s Twitter-like Weibo network (NASDAQ:) stated that “Hong Kong and Shanghai have had three different epidemic responses models.”
In a post that was widely shared, the author zangyn stated, “Hong Kong will be the most open but is the worst.” Shanghai might be the most exhausting and miserable, but Shenzhen is most effective.
There were many responses to the outbreak by Shanghai’s residential areas and compounds. Some people opted for locksdowns that lasted as much as two weeks. Other sealed-off areas said that they weren’t told for how long.
There were also challenges for residents’ committees involved in organizing testing programs. A compound provided tokens in order to stop outsiders taking advantage of the test.
According to data from China’s National Health Commission, the number of new cases locally transmitted in China – including Shanghai infections – was 1,947, an increase from 1,656 one day prior.
China did not count 2,177 new local cases as confirmed. This was an increase of 2,384 from yesterday. With no deaths new or existing, the death rate was at 4638, which is unchanged from yesterday.
According to Sunday’s report, China has reported 32,226 cases in China with symptoms confirmed by both residents and foreigners.
