DUBLIN, (Reuters) – Ryanair aims at achieving a third its target for decarbonisation by using sustainable aviation fuels. It will also rely upon offset measures to reduce its carbon emissions to zero by 2050.

Last year, the largest European airline by passengers, Ireland’s Irish Airlines, pledged to use sustainable aviation fuels for 12.5% of their flights by 2030. However, Chief Executive Michael O’Leary stated that he was not certain Ryanair would achieve this “very ambitious goal.”

A sustainable jet fuel typically produces as much carbon as fossil fuels. It offers airlines the opportunity to go green while still flying.

On Monday, the budget airline announced that it will be able to meet its 32% decarbonisation goal with its order for 210 Boeing (NYSE) 737 MAX aircraft. These jets use 16% less fuel and carry 4% more passengers than current generation 737s.

Critics claim that the low-cost model of business encourages more frequent flying and increases the number of passengers.

Ryanair expects to increase its passenger numbers from 150 million per year in the years before the COVID-19 pandemic, to around 225 million annually by 2026. However, it anticipates that Europe’s short-haul capacity will be less after the pandemic.

Ryanair stated that offset measures will be carbon capture and offset projects, as well as supporting policies and reforms of the government. This will add 24%.

The airline estimates that Ryanair will be able to achieve the remaining 10% of its decarbonisation targets through one such reform: an overhaul of European Union’s airtraffic management, which was agreed on by the member states last January.
