REUTERS/Paresh DavidSAN FRANCISCO, (Reuters) -Alphabet Inc’s Waymo unit stated Monday that it was ready to eliminate safety drivers from autonomous vehicles in San Francisco. However, the company did not specify when fully driverless services would be available.
Waymo started offering free autonomous rides to San Francisco’s limited population in August. It uses Jaguar electric vehicles and has safety drivers.
Waymo’s co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana claimed Monday that the company has provided hundreds of ‘robotaxi’ rides to people in its densely populated area for six months.
Mawakana wrote in a blog that this planned driverless operation “would mark a major step towards deploying a fully autonome commercial service.”
Waymo and Cruise, which is majority-owned by General Motors (NYSE :), received permits earlier this month from the California Public Utilities Commission to enable them to bill riders for rides with a California driver.
For driverless passenger service, the CPUC will issue separate permits.
Waymo refused to comment about the status of Waymo’s driverless permit application at CPUC.
