REUTERS/Carlos Osorio(Reuters) –Air Canada announced Tuesday that 26 additional long-range Airbus A321neo planes would be added to its fleet, as demand for travel has risen after a blip in the Omicron coronavirus.
Canadian airlines are experiencing a rebound in spring travel, as COVID-19 is showing signs of ebbing. However, surging oil prices due the Russia-Ukraine crises are casting a shadow before the summer vacation season.
Canada’s biggest carrier stated that the new version of A321neo, which will be replacing the older model, is more efficient in fuel consumption. This new aircraft will be able to fly approximately 11 hours, and has a range around 8,700km (5545.93 miles).
Canadian Airlines stated that it would lease 15 Air Lease Corp (NYSE:) Corp aircraft, and five AerCap Holdings from Dublin.
Airbus S.A.S. will acquire six planes. An agreement with Airbus S.A.S. would allow for the purchase of six additional aircraft between 2027-2030.
Air Canada stated that deliveries will begin in 2024 and the last aircraft will arrive in 2027. Air Canada is currently looking for an engine manufacturer to build the A321neo extra-large.
Air Canada operated a total of 214 aircraft as part of its mainline and Air Canada Rouge aircraft fleets. This includes 136 narrow-body single-aisle aircraft.
Air Canada’s traffic was suffering due to the pandemic. It was forced to cancel its plans to buy 33 Airbus SE (OTC 🙂 220 aircraft last year after it received a C$5.9 million ($4.69bn) aid package.
