WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has approved a request to make 100 National Guard troops available to help protect the Capitol if needed, the Pentagon said on Friday, ahead of a planned rally supporting people charged with taking part in the deadly Jan. 6 riot.
The Pentagon spokeswoman said that the troops would remain based at the D.C. Armory, but only after all federal, state, local and regional law enforcement authorities have been reached.
According to the spokesman, the “task force” will be used only upon the request of Capitol Police. It is intended to assist in the protection of the U.S. Capitol Building as well as the Congressional Office buildings. They are responsible for verifying the credentials of anyone seeking entry to the building and manning the building’s entrance points.
