WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Former President Donald Trump has endorsed challengers to five congressional Republicans, part of his effort to assert dominance over the party after losing his November re-election bid to Democrat Joe Biden.
Trump is focusing his anger on the small number of Republican lawmakers that voted to impeach him for inciting the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol firestorm or convict him in a Senate court that ended in his acquittal.
Below are notable Republicans that Trump aims to take down through his endorsements
REPRESENTATIVE ANTHONY GONZALEZ
Gonzalez, a two-term U.S. representative from Ohio who voted to impeach Trump for inciting supporters to launch a deadly assault on the Capitol, on Thursday became the first of Trump’s targets to withdraw https://www.reuters.com/world/us/republican-congressman-who-voted-impeach-trump-wont-seek-re-election-2021-09-17 from a re-election bid after the former president endorsed a Republican challenger.
The Ohio Republican Party had rebuked Gonzalez for voting against impeachment. They called him to resign from his congressional seat. Gonzalez stated that “the toxic dynamics within our party” were responsible for his decision to withdraw. Trump has supported Max Miller, a former White House adviser for Gonzalez’s seat.
REPRESENTATIVE LIZ CHENEY
Cheney was the highest-profile lawmaker of the 10 Republicans in the House of Representatives who voted to impeach Trump. U.S. Representative for Wyoming, she was fired from her post as the No. Following the vote of impeachment, 3 House Republican was removed. Cheney is the scion from a distinguished Republican family. His father, Dick Cheney, served as U.S. Vice President between 2001 and 2009. In a Sept. 9 statement endorsing Wyoming attorney Harriet Hageman https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-endorses-challenger-republican-cheney-wyoming-house-race-2021-09-09, who is challenging Cheney, Trump called Cheney “disloyal.”
SENATOR LISA MURKOWSKI
The U.S. senator for Alaska was one of seven Republican Senators who voted to convict Trump and remove him from office. Trump was not convicted. Murkowski is a well-known independent who will be challenging Trump for the seat. Trump has chosen Kelly Tshibaka to run against Murkowski. She is a former commissioner for state administration.
REPRESENTATIVE JAIME HERRERA BEUTLER
The U.S. representative from Washington state not only voted to impeach Trump, she submitted evidence in his Senate trial against the former president. Herrera Beutler stated in a statement, that Kevin McCarthy, the House’s top Republican, told her of a conversation he had on Jan. 6 during the storm at the Capitol. In which Trump replied, “Well Kevin, these people are more upset than you about the election.” Trump has supported Army veteran Joe Kent in his bid to unseat Herrera Beutler. Kent has served as Congressman since 2011.
REPRESENTATIVE FRED UPTON
Upton, who has represented Michigan in the House since 1987, was an early critic of Trump’s false claims that he lost the November presidential election due to widespread fraud. Upton claimed in January that his vote for impeachment was meant to “send the clear message” the United States would not allow a president to impede the peaceful transfer power. Trump has given his support to Steve Carra (a Michigan state lawmaker)’s attempt at challenging Upton.
