MOSCOW (Reuters) -A student gunman opened fire at a university in the Russian city of Perm on Monday, killing five people and injuring six others, law enforcement authorities said.
Perm State University is located approximately 1,300km (800miles) east of Moscow. The university spokesperson said that the gunman was taken into custody shortly after the shooting incident.
Local media footage shows that students jumped from windows on the first floor to flee the building. They landed heavily and then ran to safety.
Russia’s Investigative Committee (the agency responsible for investigating major crimes) said that the shooter was a student from the university.
Russia places strict limits on civilian firearm ownership. But, some types of guns may be available to purchase for hunting or self-defence, after owners have successfully passed all tests and satisfied other requirements.
