Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition

Amazon on Tuesday announced three new versions of its Kindle Paperwhite e-reader.

It is Amazon’s first major update of the Kindle Paperwhite since 2018. The update includes several features. Although some people may not be able to update their Kindles often (maybe not until it dies completely), there are enough features that many may wish to switch. Although the Kindles aren’t a big business for Amazon as a whole, they do help to drive customers to Amazon over other retailers.

These three models are the Paperwhite Signature Edition (which adds some extra features to the existing models), the Paperwhite Kids (the standard Paperwhite) and the Paperwhite Kids (the Paperwhite Kids). You can order all three starting Tuesday. They will be shipped Oct. 27.

Notably, these models do not offer cellular connectivity. If you need to access books via Wi-Fi, you will have to get the Kindle Oasis. This is likely due to the fact that older Kindles were running on 3G networks, which wireless carriers all over the globe are gradually discontinuing as they move to 5G.

Here’s what’s new:

The new Kindle Paperwhite costs $139.99 and includes a bigger 6.8-inch screen, up from 6-inches on the prior model, and smaller bezels on the sides of the screen. You get up to 10 week battery life, which is more than the 6-weeks for the older model. Also, it includes USB-C charging. Fully charging it takes approximately 2.5 hours. Like previous models, the device is IPX8-waterproof, meaning it will not be damaged by water. The new processor makes it 20% more efficient than the previous model. It also has the warmer light function from the higher-end Kindle Oasis. This allows you to add an orange tint that will make it easier for your eyes to read in bed.

The Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition costs $189.99 and offers the same features as the regular model but with 32GB of storage instead of 8GB, which means there’s more room for books and audiobooks. The Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition looks exactly the same, but it also supports wireless charging. This means you can use any existing wireless charger to charge your phone. You can adjust the brightness or dimming of your light by using an automatic-adjusting feature.

The Kindle Paperwhite Kids Edition also includes the same features as the regular Paperwhite but costs $159 and includes one year of Amazon Kids+, a kid-friendly cover and a 2-year replacement guarantee.
