LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -Royal drama “The Crown” and feel good comedy “Ted Lasso” nabbed the top prizes at television’s Emmy awards on Sunday on a night dominated by streaming shows, British talent and rare wins by women.
The Queen’s Gambit, a chess drama, was awarded the best limited series title. It tied “The Crown”, with 11 wins each. https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/key-winners-2021-emmy-awards-2021-09-20
The best drama series win for “The Crown” gave Netflix (NASDAQ:) its biggest prize so far, while Apple (NASDAQ:) TV+ entered streaming’s big league with the best comedy series win for “Ted Lasso.” Apple TV+ and Netflix had never won an Emmy for best comedy series or best drama series.
Jason Sudeikis (the star and co-creator “Ted Lasso”) was awarded the title of best comedy actor. British actors Hannah Waddingham, and Brett Goldstein were also awarded statuettes. The story follows a team of English soccer players who struggled to make ends meet during the worst days of the coronavirus epidemic. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-awards-emmys-ted-lasso/from-believe-to-biscuits-ted-lasso-turned-on-the-charm-idUSKBN2GG04R
“This show is about family. This series is all about teachers and mentors. It’s also about the show’s co-stars. Sudeikis declared on Sunday that without these three important people in my life, I would not be where I am today.
A nominees list with the highest number of people of color in history was not enough to win, but only one person emerged as the winner.
There was Michaela Coel of Britain who won the Emmy Award for Variety special for “I May Destroy You”, her harrowing and disturbingly sexual assault drama; RuPaul who hosts “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” and “Hamilton”, the Broadway cast.
An honorary award was presented to Debbie Allen, a dancer, actor and singer. “It’s taken a lot of courage to be the only woman in the room most of the time,” Allen said.
This was an enjoyable evening for both women and Britons.
Coel dedicated her Emmy for sexual assault victims.
Lucia Aniello won a rare win as a director for “Hacks”, a comedy about a dying comedian. Also, she was among the winners of co-writers. The directing Emmy was won by Jessica Hobbs, a British actor.
Hobbs explained that not many women have received this award, so she feels like they are standing beside her.
Six of the twelve acting awards were given to Britons. These included Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor and Josh O’Connor who played Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles. The fourth season of “The Crown,” which focused on Charles’ unhappy marriage to Princess Diana, awarded seven of the 12 awards.
We are all delighted. “I am proud. Thank you. Peter Morgan (creator of “The Crown”) said that they were going to have a party at the London gathering for cast and crew.
Ewan McGregor, a surprising winner of the role of “Halston” fashion designer was surprised to win Kate Winslet’s exuberant part as an ill-fated detective in “Mare of Easttown.”
Because of concern about the Delta virus, Sunday’s ceremony had to be moved from the indoor tent in Downtown Los Angeles. There were no mandatory vaccines or testing for the guests and a lower guest list. But the red carpet was back in pre-pandemic times.
