U.S. Senate confirms Batchelder for Treasury tax post By Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate on Wednesday confirmed Lily Batchelder to serve as assistant secretary for tax policy at the Treasury Department, where she will play a big role in implementing tax changes sought by President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats.
With 15 Republicans supporting Batchelder, the 64-34 vote was enough to confirm her appointment.
With at least nine other awaiting confirmation, this vote confirms Batchelder as the fourth Treasury Department political appointee. Republican holdovers on unrelated issues have prevented many of Biden’s nominees from being confirmed.
This happened after the vote on Cloture. It essentially stops any debate about any bill before the Senate, and gives a 30 hour window for a final vote. It eliminates senators from being able to filibuster (or hold the floor indefinitely) and defer a vote.
Batchelder, who served as the Senate Finance Committee’s chief tax counsel from 2010 to 2014, has pledged to work with Congress on tax policy that fosters economic recovery, promotes equality and addresses climate change.
Ron Wyden (Senate Finance Committee Chairman) said that Batchelder’s nomination was urgently needed. Batchelder had been announced in April.
“Secretary Janet Yellen requires her whole team to be in place at Treasury. For years, the country will be dealing with the aftermath of the economic crash and pandemic. There’s a long way to go before full recovery,” he said in a statement on the Senate floor.
