BERLIN (Reuters) – The German election race heated up on Thursday as the lead of the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) over Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives narrowed to just four points, three days before the federal election.
According to the Kantar survey, SPD support fell one point to 25 percent for Olaf Scholz (its candidate as chancellor). Scholz was also finance minister in Merkel’s grand coalition.
The conservative CDU/CSU alliance’s chancellor candidate, Armin Scholz, saw support rise one percentage point, to 22%. Meanwhile, the Greens lost a point, to 16%, and the more business friendly Free Democrats (FDP), remained at 11%.
Merkel is expected to resign after her tenure in office since 2005. Scholz, the SPD’s most popular candidate to replace Merkel as chancellor is by far Germany’s choice.
