NEW DELHI (Reuters) – India is likely to allow the export of domestically produced doses of Russia’s Sputnik Light COVID-19 vaccine this month, as the shot has yet to be approved in India, two sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

Local media have reported that Indian drugmaker Hetero has already manufactured 2 million doses of the single-shot vaccine, for whose approval the country’s drug regulator has sought a separate “immune-bridging clinical trial” https://cdsco.gov.in/opencms/opencms/system/modules/CDSCO.WEB/elements/common_download.jsp?num_id_pk=MTQ5Ng== in its residents.

Sources said “Sputnik Light exports should begin this month,” but they declined to identify the source. Light isn’t an Indian approved vaccine, and there are stocks. It is being pressured by the government to sell.

Hetero, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories are Indian partners to Russian sovereign wealth funds RDIF. They market the Sputnik range vaccines worldwide. India’s Health Ministry and RDIF didn’t respond to a request.

India’s health ministry and RDIF have not responded to a request for comment. Light is one of two components in the Sputnik V two-dose vaccination that have been authorized for immediate use. Indian experts have yet to confirm that the single-dose vaccine works well for Indians, although Light has been approved in several countries.

Out of the 839.1million shots, 907,766 Sputnik V has been administered in South Asia.

After shipments to India were stopped in April due to rising infections, India will resume exports in October of approved COVID vaccinations. This is mainly an AstraZeneca shot (NASDAQ:). Since then, output has increased dramatically.
