ZURICH (Reuters) – Moderna (NASDAQ:) Inc Chief Executive Stéphane Bancel thinks the coronavirus pandemic could be over in a year as increased vaccine production ensures global supplies, he told the Swiss newspaper Neue Zuercher Zeitung.

The industry’s rapid expansion in production capacity over the last six month means that enough vaccines will be on hand by the middle next year to ensure everyone can get vaccinated. In an interview, he stated that boosters would also be feasible to the required extent.

He said that vaccines would soon be made available for babies.

Because the Delta virus is contagious, those who are not vaccinated won’t have to get them. This will result in an epidemic similar to the flu. It’s up to you whether or not you want to get vaccinated. Otherwise, it will be a miserable winter. If you choose not to get vaccinated, then you run the risk of getting sick or ending up in hospital.

He was asked whether that would mean a return of normality in the second quarter of next year.

Bancel stated that he expects governments to approve booster shots in order for patients who have been vaccinated since last fall.

Because the booster shot was half as powerful, it would have more available.

“The biggest problem is the vaccine’s volume. We would have three billion vaccines worldwide if the dosage was half that of the current 2 billion.

Moderna did not have the time or resources to alter the formula of the booster shot for this year.

In clinical trials, we are now testing Delta-optimized variations. They will serve as the basis of the 2022 booster vaccine. Scientists believe that Delta plus Beta is the next possible mutation. We also test it.

Moderna is able to reuse existing production lines in order to produce the new versions of the COVID-19 vaccine. He said that the price for vaccinations will not change.
