(Reuters) – Pennsylvania’s Democratic attorney general filed a lawsuit against Republican state lawmakers on Thursday in an attempt to stop their subpoena for detailed personal information on voters as part of their partisan review of the 2020 election.

After Republicans in the Pennsylvania state Senate reviewing the review sent Veronica Degraffenreid a subpoena, asking for information regarding millions of Pennsylvanian voters. This included partial Social Security numbers as well as drivers’ license numbers.

In a lawsuit filed in state court by Attorney General Josh Shapiro, the suit argues that the subpoena is unjustified and targets constitutionally protected information, due to the absence of any evidence of widespread electoral fraud.

“Giving this data away would compromise the privacy of every Pennsylvania voter — that violates Pennsylvanians’ constitutional rights,” Shapiro said in a statement.

In Pennsylvania, the election review was part of a larger effort by Republicans to question the result in 2020. This is a response to former President Donald Trump’s baseless claim that he lost to systemic fraud.

Numerous audits have confirmed that Trump lost Pennsylvania by almost 81,000 votes to President Joe Biden. This certification was made months before. The election was also discussed in both Pennsylvania legislature chambers. However, no evidence is available to support Biden winning.

Shapiro brought a lawsuit against Jake Corman and Chris Dush, both Pennsylvania senators. This lawsuit follows one filed by Democratic members on the committee last week. They are trying to block the subpoenas and argue that the review was an attempt to challenge the election several months after the law allows.

Dush is the chairman of the committee. He stated that the purpose of the review wasn’t to reverse Trump’s loss, but instead, it was intended to identify flaws within the state’s electoral systems and inform any future legislative solutions.

Jason Thompson, Corman’s spokesperson said that Shapiro was trying to prevent the legislators from fulfilling their constitutional responsibility of overseeing the executive branch.
