Target to hire 100,000 seasonal workers this holiday season, fewer than last year By Reuters

(Reuters) – Target Corp (NYSE:) said on Thursday it plans to hire 100,000 seasonal workers this year, fewer than last year, to prepare for the holiday season at a time when the industry grapples with tight labor supply.
Target said that it would offer its employees more hours during holiday season and add $75 million to their pay. This comes at a time when many U.S. retailers are giving raises and offering better incentives for workers.
Target raised its starting salary to $15 last year and announced that it will hire approximately 130,000 seasonal employees each year for 2019-20.
Target was one of the few retailers to enjoy a positive holiday season, and its sales increased 17.2% last year. Target’s investments in its online store helped it gain market share over smaller brick-and mortar competitors.
To better support in-store pickup and a service where store workers bring customer orders to their cars, Target this year is tripling the number of its store fulfillment expert roles over the last two years.
Macy’s Inc, a department store chain, is adding more employees this year. Walmart Inc, on the other hand, is adding 20,000 people to its supply chain division in advance of the holiday season. This starts a day after Thanksgiving, and runs into January.
