VW software to alter emissions breaches EU law

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Software used by Volkswagen AG (OTC:) to alter pollutant emissions based on the outside temperature and altitude breaches EU law and cannot be justified by its role to protect the engine, an adviser to the EU’s top court said on Thursday.

Although they are required to follow the advice of the advocate general, judges at the Court of Justice of the European Union do not have to.
