REUTERS/Andrew Boyers/File PhotoLONDON (Reuters) -Hungary’s Wizz Air is focused on organic growth, its chief supply chain officer said, declining to comment on whether the low-cost airline had recently made a takeover approach for bigger rival easyJet (LON:).
Owain Jones, chief supply chain officer and legal officer at Wizz Air said that “our focus remains organic growth” during Thursday’s AirFinance Journal conference.
Wizz is believed to be the potential suitor for easyJet, according to sources. The British airline had earlier said that it received an offer in September but didn’t name the bidder.
Jones declined to answer questions about speculation from the media, and said that Wizz did not have any comment.
Wizz Air has seen a rapid growth over the last five year, expanding its reach into Western Europe via its Eastern European base. In the past, Jones said he could not comment on speculations about Wizz when asked if Wizz wanted to increase its presence at Gatwick’s London no.2 airport. This is an easyJet stronghold.
Gatwick slot availability may become available soon after British Airways stated earlier that Thursday that the airline was discontinuing short-haul services from Gatwick.
He said that Wizz “remains as interested in Gatwick, as we’ve been and as I have been saying and (Wizz chief Executive) Jo Varadi has been saying ever since the beginning of the pandemic.”
Ryanair Europe’s most low cost airline, has been questioning whether Gatwick would be a good place to operate low-cost carriers. Wizz however stated it could make Gatwick operation possible.
Jones was asked questions about the costs of Gatwick airport. Jones replied, “We will only move to an Airport if it’s going to operate at the right level.”
According to industry sources, Wizz has at least 240 planes on order and is currently in talks with European planemaker Airbus about the purchase of 100 more narrowbody aircraft. Jones, however, refused to comment on whether negotiations are underway.
He said that they will continue to examine the market for aircraft and determine what best suits our growing aspirations.
