WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky said on Friday she overruled the agency’s advisory committee vote against approving Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine booster shots to at-risk adult workers to protect healthcare and frontline workers and ensure equity.

She said that many of the essential workers and frontline workers in congregation settings are from areas where they have been most affected.

She said, “It was about providing access rather than withholding it.”

Walensky explained that approval of boosters to certain high-risk people is a “first stage” and that the CDC would keep its booster guidance current in real time. The agency will evaluate in the coming weeks data on boosters for recipients of the J&J (NYSE:) and Moderna (NASDAQ:) COVID-19 vaccines.
