AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – A woman whose daughter was among 298 people who died when a Malaysian Airlines jet was shot down over Ukraine said on Friday she wanted to look the suspects in the eye and “make them feel our loss and pain”.

Four suspects were brought to trial in connection with the tragedy. They killed their relatives in flight MH17 that was shot down in eastern Ukraine.

They concluded the three-week long process of 90 statements by relatives coming from eight countries. The victims spoke out about their grief and their hope for justice.

International investigators and prosecutors believe the plane was carrying a Russian surface to air missile when it crashed into the Kuala Lumpur airport.

Jeanne Hornikx was accompanied by Astrid Hornikx (31-year-old) and Bart Hornikx (44) who were also onboard.

Hornikx presented the judges with a tattoo that was her daughter’s fingerprint and said “that is how she got identified”.

“I’d like to be able to gaze straight into the eyes of the suspects and feel their loss and pain. Hornikx explained that their suffering could become ours, so maybe we can share in the pain and they might feel it.

Three Russians were charged by Dutch prosecutors with transporting the missile systems. The three men were convicted of murder.

The attack was blamed by Moscow, as two-thirds were Dutch citizens.

Russia has refused extradition of the suspects, claiming that it hasn’t supported or funded pro-Russian rebels opposing Ukrainian government forces. One defendant only has appointed a lawyer.

The verdict will not be announced until the latter part of 2022.
