(Reuters) – Two-time Olympian gymnast and sexual abuse survivor Aly Raisman is sharing her story of resilience and healing in a new television special, “Aly Raisman: Darkness to Light.”

Raisman, who is a three-hour-long, two-part special, recounts her recovery journey and talks with experts and survivors of sexual abuse including Tarana Burke, founder #MeToo.

Raisman admitted that the production of the special healing was rewarding and she enjoyed it. But she did recall feeling exhausted physically.

She told Reuters that she felt sickened and tired while lying on the couch, or in between interviews with survivors. While I’m working to prevent myself from having feelings like this, I also recognize that it is okay to have those emotions.

Raisman won six Olympic medals for her passion in 2012 and 2016.

It has had a profound impact on my life and I have to start speaking out about it.

Raisman along with other gymnasts Simone Biles McKayla Marchoney, Maggie Nichols and McKayla Martoney, spoke to a U.S. Senate committee about how the FBI allowed Larry Nassar, USA Gymnastics’ doctor, to continue sexually abusing young women over more than one year.

Nassar was ultimately tried in January 2018. He was sentenced for the abuse of young female gymnasts entrusted into his care.

Raisman (27 years old) expressed dismay at the inability to do more to investigate USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee for concealing Nassar’s abuse over many years. To hold both the FBI and sport bodies accountable, she wants an independent inquiry.

It is frightening to see how many people knew about his abuse and yet didn’t take any action. It took a village in order to save a child pedophile, she stated.

Raisman said, “Without answers, we cannot believe in a safe future. We don’t know whether there are still children who were abused or if they’re working with others.”

After an independent investigation was conducted, the USOPC released a statement stating that it had implemented reforms.

Raisman stated that six years ago, she was able to develop a new love for gymnastics.

She said that she “basically lived in the gym.” She said, “Some days I trained up to six to seven hour long. It was exhausting and so I put all I had into it.

“And so I believe that there were some people who let us down in this sport. It was hard for me… to separate that from my passion for gymnastics.

The U.S. cable television network Lifetime will broadcast “Alyraisman: Darkness to Light”, on September 24. Lifetime is a unit of A+E Networks, a 50–50 joint venture between Hearst Communications and The Walt Disney (NYSE:) Co.
