Nasdaq short interest down 0.07% in mid-September By Reuters

The short interest in the Nasdaq fell to approximately 11.014 billion shares by September 15, from 11.023 trillion shares at Aug. 31.
Short-term investors who buy securities borrow shares, then purchase them at a lower cost, then return the money to their lender.
You can also shorten shares as part of an hedging strategy.
