WASHINGTON (Reuters) – United Airlines was fined $1.9 million Friday by the U.S. Transportation Department for violating federal rules on long tarmac delays and ordered to cease future similar violations.

According to the department, 25 United Airlines flights were allowed to stay on the tarmac longer than necessary without passengers being allowed to leave. This was between December 2015 to February 2015. United maintained Friday its commitment to complying with all DOT rules. It said it will be continuing to identify and implement improvements in the way we handle difficult operational conditions.
