LONDON (Reuters) – Emotional vigils were held on Friday for a teacher who was found murdered in a London park last week, highlighting again public anger over violence against women, while police said a suspect had been released under investigation.

Sabina Nessa (28), left home in South London to walk to the bar to meet her friend. Her body was discovered in the park by her friend the following day. She didn’t arrive.

In the UK, there were several vigils to honor Nessa as well as to raise awareness about violence against women.

“Our world is broken. At a vigil close to the crime scene, Jebina Yasmin Islamic, Jebina’s sister, said that she was “lost for words.”

“No one should experience what we are experiencing.”

Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of Britain, shared his sympathies with Nessa and her family during this “deeply distressing” time. Kate, Duchess-of-Cambridge, was also saddened by another victim of violence on the streets.

After a string of shocking murders, women have voiced their anger and sadness at the inaction to end violence against women.

Sarah Everard, a South London police officer abducted and raped her and then murdered. A British teenager was convicted in July for killing Nicole Smallman and Bibaa Henry in a park in northwest London last year.

Denise Scott McDonald, local councillor, stated that women were repeatedly encouraged to modify their behavior in order to lower personal risk and shift responsibility from men’s actions.

Sabina was a sister, friend and teacher. This is just the latest victim in an awful, lengthy list of women who have been attacked and killed on our streets.

Metropolitan Police stated that they released the 38-year old man, who was taken into police custody at an address in Lewisham. But he is still under investigation. He could also be taken back to detention.
