ROME (Reuters) -The tiny republic of San Marino has voted overwhelmingly in favor of legalising abortion in a referendum, overturning a law dating back to 1865, official results showed on Sunday.
A total of 77.30% supported the idea of allowing abortions up to 12 week of gestation and thereafter only if there is a grave risk to the life of the mother or serious malformation of her foetus.
As authorities have increased abortion laws in other countries, such as Poland and Texas, the vote was cast in the 33,000-strong northern Italian enclave. Mexico’s Supreme Court declared that the penalization of abortion was unconstitutional earlier this month.
Women who end their pregnancies in San Marino were facing three years imprisonment. Anyone who has an abortion is subject to a double-digit sentence.
San Marino women who wanted to have an abortion went to Italy. They could not get it privately for around 1,500 euro ($1,765).
A few other European countries, such as the Mediterranean island Malta and the Vatican City micro-states, ban abortion.
