(Reuters) – The Taliban government in Afghanistan appealed on Sunday for international flights to be resumed, promising full cooperation with airlines and saying that problems at Kabul airport had been resolved.
After the fall of the Western-backed government, the new administration is making greater efforts to make Afghanistan more open and accept international recognition.
The airport has been open for passenger and aid flights, but only a few have operated. The airport has been closed since its closure in response to the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of Afghans, as well as foreigners, from the capital.
With the help of Turkish and Qatari technical teams, the airport has been opened again.
Although many airlines have limited their services, such as Pakistan International Airlines and some passengers have been able get to places by air flights, it has been revealed that the average price is much higher.
Abdul Qahar Balkhi (foreign ministry spokesperson) said many Afghans had been left behind abroad due to the suspension of international flight. This also made it difficult for people to travel overseas for their work and study.
“As the Kabul International Airport problems have been resolved, and the airport has full operational status for domestic and foreign flights, the IEA assures every airline of its complete cooperation,” he stated, using an abbreviation of Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan which was the Taliban’s designation for their new government.
The Taliban are currently facing a serious economic crisis. They have also been under pressure to address issues such as girls education and allegations of reprisals against officials from the former government.
