PANAMA CITY (Reuters) – Up to 4,000 migrants, most of them Haitians, have passed through the treacherous jungles of the Darien Gap in Panama on the Colombian border as they make their way north to the United States, two Panamanian government sources said.

In recent weeks, a camp erupted at the U.S./Mexican border. It included Haitians and added to President Joe Biden’s problems with his migration policies. There were 15,000 people at the border on Sept. 18. This was a result of Haitians fleeing political, social and economic chaos.

The camp was cleared of thousands of Haitians https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-border-camp-cleared-haitians-thousands-more-move-2021-09-25 by Friday, with most remaining in the United States for now and others expelled on deportation flights or returned to Mexico.

According to an anonymous source from Panama’s security ministry who asked for anonymity, between 3,500 and 4,000 migrants pass through Chiriqui and Darien migration reception stations. Sources say the group comprises Cubans and others.

Around 16,000 migrants have been left behind in Necocli, Colombia’s northern beach resort. They are waiting for their chance to travel by limited boat transportation towards Darien Gap. Here, smugglers lead groups through the most hazardous and difficult parts of Latin America.

Although Colombia and Panama had agreed to allow 500 migrants to cross each day last month, local officials repeatedly called for an increase in the limit to meet the demands of the 1,500-plus migrants that arrive daily.

On Thursday, Panama’s President Laurentino Cortizo said to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that more than 80,000 migrants from other countries have crossed through Panama this year. His country spends its small budget for migrant care and he called on international help.

According to the National Migration Service figures, Panama has received a total of 88 514 migrants through Panama’s Darien jungle this year. In January, Panama had 800 migrants, but that number increased to 30,000 by August.
