BOGOTA (Reuters) – At least ten members of a group of FARC rebel dissidents were killed in an armed forces bombing in Colombia’s southeastern jungle, the head of the military said on Monday.
Although the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia signed a peace agreement in 2016, with most of its members being demobilized and the majority of them leaving the military, some ex-fighters continue fighting the government for illegal mining and drug production.
In Guainia, Guainia’s top region for growing coca (the base ingredient of cocaine), the military attacked a village in Morichal Nuevo.
“At the moment we have, partly, the death in the course of military operation of ten bandits of this organization and an essential seizure of material,” General Luis Fernando Navarro said, the chief of the armed force.
Sources estimate that there are around 2,500 militants in dissident organizations, which compete for territory with crime gangs and the National Liberation Army’s guerrillas.
