SYDNEY (Reuters) – Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) government plans to unveil its roadmap on Monday for reopening the state from COVID-19 shutdowns, detailing the differing levels of freedoms to be afforded to citizens based on their vaccination status.

Based on the current vaccine rates, officials anticipate that 60% of those aged 16 or over are now fully immunized. This is higher than the national average 52%. Officials also expect to meet their 80% target by the end of October.

2GB radio’s Deputy Premier John Barilaro said, “You will be amazed at the announcements.” To enjoy all the freedoms discussed, everyone must be immunized.

On Monday, the state relaxed some restrictions, even in Sydney’s capital. This allowed construction sites to resume full capacity, and outdoor swimming pools could reopen after social distancing was lifted.

On Sunday, authorities promised that travel in the state would be allowed once the threshold of 80% is met.

Australia is currently under the threat of another wave of infection. This third wave has been fueled by the deadly Delta virus, which has caused lockdowns in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.

Australia must have a 70% to 80% vaccine rate by the end of its national reopening program. Some states that are virus-free have stated they will keep their borders locked even after the goal is met.

Victoria, the home of Melbourne, will likely relax certain curbs starting Wednesday. The state’s first dose vaccination rate is predicted to rise above 80%. On Monday officials reported that 705 people were infected and there was one more death. This is the third consecutive day of declining numbers.

Australia was able to manage the COVID-19 epidemic better than most other comparable countries, by closing its borders in time for the pandemic. The country experienced its greatest increase in infection rates after the Delta variant arrived in Sydney in June. Since then, 68% of almost 100,000 cases were reported.

Due to higher levels of vaccination among the most vulnerable, the fatality rate has decreased this year. 1232 deaths were recorded.
