Democrats weigh all options after Republicans block gov’t funding bill -Durbin By Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Democrats are exploring all of their options to avert a government shutdown this week after Republicans on Monday shot down a measure to fund federal agencies and suspend the debt limit, U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin told MSNBC.
In an interview Tuesday, Durbin said “We were exploring all our options” but refused to go into detail. Durbin stated that it could take three to four weeks for Democrats to attempt reconciliation in order to pass funding measures with fewer 60 votes.
It is not feasible for us to even consider it, he stated.
On Monday, the Senate split in two failed to move the legislation before the deadlines. Current federal funding was due to expire on Thursday. The U.S. Treasury is expected to run out of borrowing capabilities sometime between Oct. 15th and Nov. 4.
This party-lined vote of 48-50 was not enough to pass the bill in the 100 seat Senate. But Chuck Schumer, Senate Democratic leader, could still call another vote. The Democrats hold a narrow control of both Congress chambers and they must find another method to maintain the government’s operation.
Durbin stated, “It amazes me they would use that procedural weapon…to really jeopardize this country’s economy and its recovery period from this pandemic.”
