BRUSSELS (Reuters) – The European Commission and EU consumer authorities urged Volkswagen (DE:) on Tuesday to compensate all consumers, not just those in Germany, for having misled them over the emissions of vehicles they bought.
In 2015, the Dieselgate scandal triggered a number of legal proceedings. Some of these cases have been brought before the European Court of Justice.
Didier REYNDERS, EU justice commissioner, said that “there have been court cases exposing Volkswagen’s unfair treatment consumers” and added:
According to me, the compensation must be extended to all consumers, and not just those who are residing in Germany.
Volkswagen told the Commission that Volkswagen had advised it that voluntary payments to European citizens residing abroad were unjustified, as these cars are now conforming to legal requirements.
In a statement, the Commission claimed that the company’s position had not changed in spite of recent EU and national court rulings. This is why EU consumer authorities and the Commission are mounting pressure.
