(Reuters) – The European Union and China must continue engaging on a number of issues despite differences, the bloc’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell told his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in a video call on Tuesday, according to an EU statement.

“The High Rep noted that disagreements persist, but the EU and China need to continue engaging intensively on a number of key areas,” said the EU. Borrell added that he emphasized the inclusion and cooperation nature of Europe’s Indo-Pacific Strategy.

It is seeking a more tolerant stance against China as it is one of the most significant trade partners. This is in contrast to the United States, which recently signed a new security agreement (AUKUS), with Australia and Britain. The deal is widely regarded as being designed to combat China’s increasing assertiveness throughout the Pacific.

Critics said that the deal undermined President Joe Biden’s efforts to rallie allies like France after Australia abandoned a sub-sea agreement with Paris in order to purchase U.S. submarines. This angered France.

Borrell, as a signatory to the new attempt at repairing transatlantic ties welcomed a joint statement from Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron. This stated that they had agreed to talk to rebuild trust in the wake of the submarine dispute.
