Microsoft’s failed attempt to take over TikTok’s U.S. operation last year was “the strangest thing I’ve ever sort of worked on,” CEO Satya Nadella said on Monday.

TikTok had been in discussions to sell U.S. operations since August last year when the Trump administration threatened that it would ban the app. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, was not interested.

At one point, Microsoft was one of the potential acquirers, but it backed out in September 2020, when Oracle was chosen to provide cloud servers for the app.

At the Code Conference held in Beverly Hills, California, Nadella stated that TikTok was a company that came to them. TikTok found themselves in the middle of a number of problems they had across two capitals and wanted to work with a partner.

Nadella explained that TikTok wanted to initially partner with a cloud provider capable of offering security services.

“But, I was very intrigued,” he stated. Let’s just say that it is a wonderful property.

TikTok USA operations were never sold. In June, President Joe Biden signed an executive order revoking the Trump administration order to ban the app.

Nadella stated that the U.S. government eventually lost interest in the deal.

Nadella stated that Trump had a certain point of view about what he wanted to accomplish there. Then, I dropped off. This was quite interesting. It was interesting. There were times when I thought the USG needed to meet certain requirements. Then they disappeared.

Nadella said Microsoft was well-positioned to purchase or partner with TikTok, which reported earlier this week that it has a billion monthly users around the world.

According to Nadella, Microsoft is equipped with the right security technology, cloud platform and the engineers necessary to manage a code base.

TikTok was drawn to Microsoft because of its ability to manage content and protect children on social media.

Nadella indicated that it was important to have some knowledge about managing social media. We are familiar with LinkedIn and Xbox Live.

Nadella said that while he was not willing to confirm if the app is still for sale, he stated that he “is happy with what I have.” However, he said that Microsoft liked the deal due to TikTok’s design.

Nadella stated that it was an “interesting product”.
