(Reuters) – The World Health Organization (WHO) is aiming to eliminate the most deadly form of meningitis by 2030 through increased awareness and access to treatments, global plans launched by the UN-agency on Tuesday to combat the inflammatory disease showed.

Meningitis can be a serious condition that causes inflammation in the spinal cord and membranes around the brain. Meningitis can occur from viral or bacterial infection, but bacterial meningitis has the highest mortality rate of any type.

At a Geneva-based virtual conference, a group of partners created the “Global Roadmap to Fight Meningitis by 2030”. This roadmap focuses on prevention and better diagnosis.

Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus, WHO chief, said that meningitis is deadly.

It is the most prevalent disease in sub-Saharan Africa, where it affects more than 20 countries.

The disease can spread quickly and kill one of every 10 people infected. One in five suffers from chronic neurological conditions such as seizures, loss of hearing, vision, or other serious health problems.

A WHO-led program aims at reducing bacterial meningitis deaths by 70% and decreasing the overall number of cases.
