LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The Britney Spears case returns to court on Wednesday after a summer of surprise turns, shocking allegations, an engagement and mounting expectations that the 13-year-old legal arrangement that controls the singer’s life will soon end.

The surprise visit of Jamie Spears to Britney’s conservatorship has brought about a sudden halt to years of slow progress. Spears is now engaged to her long-term partner.

Spears’ lawyer is asking for Jamie Spears to be removed as guardian of her $60 million estate. A document claims that Spears was hacked into the singer’s bedroom and phone.

The details of Wednesday’s Los Angeles Superior Court hearing were not clear. It is unclear if Judge Brenda Penny would make an immediate decision.

Mathew Rosengart is the attorney for the singer. He has requested that Jamie Spears be immediately removed from his position as conservator. A transition period was also agreed to ensure that the ever-contentious conservatorship does not end before the year’s end.

Jamie Spears is the conservator of his daughter’s financial affairs from 2008, when she was placed under it following a severe mental illness. Although the conservatorship approved by court rules her financial, personal and medical affairs, it has not been disclosed what her mental state is.

Rosengart, who was preparing for Wednesday’s hearing in court, stated that Jamie Spears had “crossed immeasurable lines” and monitored her daughter’s texts, calls and emails. He also reportedly placed a listening instrument in her bedroom.

According to a New York Times documentary entitled “Controlling Britney Spears,” the claims were first made last week. Britney Spears seemed confused by the movie.

Jamie Spears stated that his actions are within his authority as conservator. Spears has refused to stand down, stating that an experienced person is required during the transition from conservatorship to regular manager of a business.

Spears increased her efforts to end the conservatorship in June, telling the judge her first public remarks that she felt it was abusive and humiliating.

Spears’ public support has grown and certain restrictions she had complained about were removed. Now she can drive her car, and her first tablet is hers.

She announced her engagement to Sam Asghari (27), her boyfriend and personal trainer of over four years. After negotiating a prenuptial agreement, they hope to get married soon.
