LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Los Angeles officials on Wednesday signaled they would vote next week to prohibit unvaccinated people from entering most businesses in the United States’ second-largest city, one of the nation’s most severe crackdowns so far of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The proposed ordinance would mandate proof of vaccination for entry to bars, clubs, shops centers, gyms and indoor spaces. All except one City Council member supported it.

Paul Kerkorian, a City Council member, said that he was sick of yahoos refusing to put on a mask when he went into Trader Joe’s grocery store. I am tired of people trying to turn this into a politically charged issue. They have destroyed all civility within our society.

Los Angeles will join San Francisco and New York as major U.S. metropolitan areas that must prove proof of immunization for indoor businesses if the proposal is accepted next week. This new rule will take effect on November 1.

The United States’ Democratic President Joe Biden has increased the pressure on unvaccinated Americans in recent weeks. Americans have criticized the United States’ laws mandating proof of vaccinations as authoritarian and unconstitutional.

The majority of Los Angeles City Council members were willing to support the proof-of vaccination measure. Joe Buscaino (a councilman) obstructed their efforts by refusing to vote and preventing a “unanimous consent” from being reached.

Buscaino claimed that the mandate for vaccines could not be implemented, citing the report of the Department of Building and Safety which stated it wasn’t equipped to enforce such laws.

Los Angeles County Unified school District issued an instruction requiring that teachers, students and staff over 12 must get inoculated before Oct. 15, unless there is a medical or religious exemption.
