Retailer Next tells Britain to relax immigration rules to save Christmas By Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) – Next, one of Britain’s biggest clothing retailers, warned it may struggle to deliver its normal service in the run up to Christmas unless the government relaxes post-Brexit immigration rules to allow more workers into the country.
Britain’s workforce shortages are already causing disruption. The shortage of truck drivers in fifth largest economy worldwide is already impacting fuel supply and has caused some shelves to be empty. Many blame Brexit.
Simon Wolfson, a Brexit backer, announced Wednesday that Next’s clothing, homeware and online shops could suffer in the lead-up to Christmas.
In its half-year financial results, Next stated, “We expect that without any relaxation of immigration laws, we will likely experience some degradation in customer service in the lead up to Christmas.”
According to the retailer, finding staff for peak season logistics and warehousing positions is becoming increasingly difficult.
The next step is to temporarily permit foreign workers to enter the UK under post-Brexit labor rules. Last week, the government announced that it will issue temporary visas for 5,000 drivers from foreign countries to address the driver shortage.
Reuters reports Monday that British warehouses are being forced to pay 30% more for staff recruitment because of worker shortages. This has exacerbated the already tight supply chain and could threaten to derail seasonal purchasing sprees.
Next stated that its stock levels are currently lower than in the time before the pandemic, but said it has improved at managing with less stock.
