White hat miner returns 7,626 ETH gas fees paid by Bitfinex

On September 27, Bitfinex-powered DEX, DeversiFi paid a whopping 7,676 ETH as a transaction fee to send $100K USDT. Interesting twist of events: the ETH miner has refunded the massive network fee to Bitfinex.

BTC PEERS reports that USDT sent $100,000 to the exchange for $23M. The DeversiFi team promised to investigate into the matter following the incident. Although there has not been any update on the investigation, it has been confirmed that the mining company who was paid the fees has agreed to repay the money.

DeversiFi reported that the miner had accepted to return the ETH.

We are grateful to block 13307440’s miner, who can now confirm that he is returning the 7626 Ethereum which were wrongly received today for a tx fees.

But it’s worth noting that the white-hat miner may have been less generous than he claimed to be. The miner could have chosen to keep the whole fee, but members of crypto communities pointed out that he kept only 50 ETH of the total amount ($150,000).

Meanwhile, questions around Ethereum’s high transaction fees have begun to spring up. The network’s transaction fees have skyrocketed yet again.

According to data on BitInfoCharts, the average transaction fee climbed to $46 on Monday. This represents the highest transaction fee since September 9.
