DUBAI (Reuters) – A group of American citizens and lawful permanent residents evacuated to the United Arab Emirates from Afghanistan flew out of the Gulf state bound for the United States on Thursday, the country’s foreign ministry said, after being temporarily held up for vetting.

According to organizers of the earlier flight, which was one of many that resulted from networks formed in support of last month’s chaos evacuation from Afghanistan, U.S. Homeland Security denied landing rights for a chart plane with more than 100 people.

The State Department stated on Wednesday that the United States would allow more than 100 U.S citizens and legal permanent residents to board the charter plane carrying Afghan citizens. They will fly to Washington on Thursday.

According to the State Department, U.S. officials are working to confirm the authenticity of the evacuation list.

The UAE’s foreign ministry replied to Reuters by email, saying that the processing of the passengers had been complete and that they were already flying for America on a commercial plane (Etihad).

However, it did not state whether all of the passengers had left.

Bryan Stern, who founded the non-profit group Project Dynamo and chartered the flight had stated that there were 28 U.S. citizens on board, along with 83 green cards holders and six U.S. Special Immigration Visas to Afghans who served the U.S. government over the twenty year war in Afghanistan.

According to President Joe Biden, the administration’s top priority was repatriating Americans as well as green card holders that were not able to evacuate Afghanistan last month.
