(Reuters) – The UHL’s general manager has been fired for speaking out against racism after an altercation between two of his players at a recent match.

Eugene Kolychev said that his voice wasn’t heard when HC Kremenchuk forward Andriy Deriskin was suspended for 13 games. He had taunted Jalen Semereck (HC Donbass) by mimicking eating a banana peeling.

Kolychev tweeted, “I’ve spoken publicly about #racism and Ukrainian Hockey Federation FIRED” me as General Manager today of the #UHL. Will it fix the problem? It won’t. It will silence me. No!NO!

An UHL spokesperson confirmed Kolychev’s firing but refused to comment further. The Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine did not respond to a request for comment.

Deniskin was reprimanded for the incident that occurred in Sunday’s game. Many players and organizations are expressing concern about Deniskin’s treatment.
