U.S. Senate votes to confirm new consumer watchdog chief By Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate voted on Thursday to confirm Rohit Chopra as director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a key agency for President Joe Biden’s administration as it tries to address social inequities underscored by the pandemic.

Chopra is currently a Democratic Member of the Federal Trade Commission. Progressives have praised him for his extensive history of protecting Americans from predatory financial institutions and student from insurmountable debt often incurred due to deceptive private loan offers.

Chopra is scheduled to start at the agency on next week.
