MILAN (Reuters) – Young activists attending this week’s climate talks in Milan are asking for a seat at the table during the upcoming U.N. COP26 summit in Glasgow to have a say in how decisions shaping their future are made.

Greta Thunberg of Sweden was one of the thousands of young climate activists who gathered in Milan this week. They wanted to be heard, and to end what she called “30 years worth of blah-blah-blah,” after nearly three decades of climate negotiations.

Eduarda Zoghbi (28), a Brazilian delegate, stated that what they really wanted was to participate in the decision-making process.

They presented a list of suggestions for inclusion on the COP26 Agenda. These proposals will be reviewed by the climate and energy ministers in the coming days.

Hoor Ahli (16 years old) from the United Arab Emirates stated that their thoughts must be shared because we will all be the next generation.

It is concerning that although much has been done, very little has been done to address global warming. These fears were further exacerbated in an August U.N report that warned of a dangerous spiraling out of control.

Glasgow Conference aims to achieve more ambitious climate action by the almost 200 countries which signed the 2015 Paris Agreement. These nations agreed to limit global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius.

“My message to world leaders is that they include youth,” Zoghbi said, adding each delegate represented the particular challenges faced by countries as a result of climate change.

Among them were Jeremy Raguain (27 years old), from Seychelles who demanded more funding for small states and Achana Sreng (25) who is a Kharia tribal member in Eastern India who advocated more rights for the indigenous community in the discussion.

Zoghbi stated that we must see those points in the main texts, and leaders need to hear us.
