HAVANA (Reuters). Hundreds of Haitians were intercepted at sea by Bahamian authorities and Cuban officials, attempting to reach America. The agents said they will return them to Haiti.

Royal Bahamas Defence Force claimed it deployed its patrol vessels to southeast Bahamas to stop a “migrant flood” from Haiti. Haiti is one of the America’s poorest countries and has been struggling with an increasing humanitarian crisis.

According to the Defence Force, these vessels have intercepted over 1000 Haitians within the past ten day. They posted images this week on the Defence Force’s Facebook (NASDAQ) page, showing small and crowded sailboats.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force urged individuals once again to abstain from long and treacherous travels on dangerous vessels. This could lead to the death of many people.

Cuba’s foreign minister said Tuesday that unspecified numbers of Haitian migrants arrived by boat in an attempt to reach Florida.

Cuba and Bahamas both stated that they will be repatriating migrants to Haiti. According to the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, repatriation is expected to begin on Thursday.

The Dominican Republic’s President Luis Abinader, who shares Hispaniola in the Caribbean, stated to the United Nations General Assembly earlier this month that Haiti is “already becoming an international problem.”

In recent weeks around 30,000 Haitians sought asylum at the U.S. border with Mexico. The U.S. has expelled approximately 5,000 Haitians.

Around 11 million people were already in danger of gang violence and starvation. The country was also facing political crises before the assassination.

Daniel Foote was the former U.S. special representative to Haiti. He stated that the state “collapsed” could not support infusions of return migrants, and he resigned last Thursday.

Cuba’s Communist-run Foreign Ministry stated on Tuesday that they needed to make sure there was regular, secure migration. It said the problem must be solved first.
