SYDNEY (Reuters), Qantas Airways Ltd declared on Friday that they would resume some international flights a month early than expected after Australia’s November announcement that fully vaccinated Australians are allowed to enter and exit the country without restriction.
Qantas is going to operate three weekly returns flights between Sydney, London and Los Angeles beginning Nov. 14, and will add additional flights as demand dictates.
Passengers who arrive in Australia for the first time will have to keep their passports safe and secure until they can leave. Friday’s announcement by the Australian government stated that not all eight of their territories or states will open at once.
Alan Joyce, Qantas’ Chief Executive stated that “we welcome the Federal government’s decision” and noted the New South Wales Government’s efforts to support the home-quarantine approach. “We are looking forward to the other states joining our ranks.”
Sydney, Australia’s largest city is located in New South Wales.
Qantas stated that it has sold some international flights in December, and had experienced strong demand from London and Los Angeles.
In March 2020, the airline ground its international fleet and began operating only repatriation and freight flights. There was a brief quarantine-free period with New Zealand.
Rival Virgin Australia does less international flight but did not make any changes to its schedule. However, it said that they would keep adding flights as the travel demand increases and restrictions are eased.
