WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The U.S. Transportation Department announced Friday that 3700 workers were temporarily laid off after Congress failed to reauthorize the surface transportation program before a Friday deadline.

According to a spokesperson for the department, the agency was “taking all steps possible to minimize the impact of the temporary lapse in authorization.” Furloughs for safety critical workers are excluded. According to aides, the U.S. is looking at a 30-day extension for surface transportation as part of negotiations over two spending and infrastructure bills.
