ALBUQUERQUE (NM) – Hundreds flew into Albuquerque’s skies on Saturday, launching hot air balloons for the first time since 2012, following a pause caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Yoda, Smokey The Bear and Creamland Cow were among the prominent balloons that flew in the Mass Ascension. This was the beginning of the 49th annual festival.
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a tourist attraction that brings thousands of dollars to the area. But, due to pandemics last year, the event was cancelled.
Websites for the event state that 588 hot balloons are participating and that almost 900,000 people will attend.
The extravaganza, which lasts for nine days, features nighttime balloon launches, balloon races and other events. There will also be musical performances and a chainsaw carving exhibit.
Although the event does not require proof of COVID-19 vaccine, all participants must use masks indoors and outdoors.
