After Australia pulled out of a $40 billion submarine contract with France, diplomattic relations between France and the United States fell to a low point. The Australian government decided instead that it would build at least eight submarines using nuclear technology from Britain and the United States.
France temporarily withdrew the US ambassador in retaliation. However, the Ambassador has since been returned to Washington DC.
Since the row over the nuclear submarine agreement broke out, President Joe Biden of the United States and President Emmanuel Macron of France have held discussions and both have promised to start “in-depth consults” about the relations between the two countries.
