MANCHESTER (Reuters) – Britain threatens Monday to end some terms in its post-Brexit trading agreement with Northern Ireland. It claims they are too harmful to keep.

According to a party statement, David Frost, Brexit minister, will address the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester to urge the EU for a solution.

The statement stated that “he will warn us that tweaking at the edges will not solve the Protocol’s fundamental problems.”

Since months, the British government is urging the bloc to reconsider the terms and conditions of the “Northern Ireland Protocol”, which governs trade between Britain’s province and EU members Ireland.

EU said that they will not be renegotiating the terms.

Boris Johnson, British Prime Minister, negotiated the Northern Ireland Protocol as part of the Brexit settlement. This has de facto created a border customs between Northern Ireland and Britain to protect trade flows between Northern Ireland and Ireland.

Britain threatened to invoke Article 16 of the Agreement, which permits either side unilaterally to seek to end some terms if they prove to be unfavorable.

Frost said that Article 16 Safeguards are now available to use, according to extracts of his speech.

Brussels must respond quickly to London’s “command paper” in July, which called for significant changes to this protocol.
