WASHINGTON (Reuters] – The White House’s senior advisor said Sunday that Democrats are likely to be disappointed by President Joe Biden’s agenda. But he also promised that two key pieces of the legislation would become law.
People will be disappointed. People will not get everything they want, that is the art of legislating, but the goal here is to get both bills, and we’re going to fight until we get both bills,” Cedric Richmond, director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Biden visited the Capitol on Friday to try to end a fight https://www.reuters.com/world/us/democrats-struggle-reach-deal-congress-bidens-agenda-2021-10-01 between moderates and progressives in his Democratic Party that has threatened the two bills that make up the core of his domestic agenda – an infrastructure bill and a multi-trillion-dollar social spending bill.
Moderate Democratic legislators sought immediate votes on the $1 trillion bill for infrastructure in the House of Representatives, which has passed the Senate. Progressives wished to delay until agreement is reached on the $3.5 trillion sweeping legislation to boost social spending and combat climate change.
According to lawmakers and aides, Biden told Democrats that they can delay the vote on the smaller bill, and reduce the bigger one by around $2 trillion.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (NYSE:) Caucus’ influential chair, stated on Sunday that a range of $1.5 trillion to $3.5 trillion was acceptable for the bill.
Jayapal, a moderate Democratic senator from Joe Manchin said that his top-line for the package was $1.5 trillion. But Jayapal stated to CNN that “that’s not going to happen.” Because it’s not enough to prioritize our priorities. “It’ll be anywhere between 1.5-3.5 trillion dollars.
Bernie Sanders (progressive democratic senator) said that $3.5 trillion was the minimum amount needed. It is impossible to deny that we will have to give in order to survive.
Richard Durbin (Senate’s second-ranked Democrat), stated to CNN that he supported $3.5 trillion, but that concessions would be made.
