ROME (Reuters – Rome’s famous “Iron Bridge” was severely damaged by a massive fire Saturday night. Parts of the structure from the 19th Century fell into the River Tiber.

This bridge was inaugurated 1863. Its formal name is Ponte Dell’Industria (Industry Bridge).

On the day of the elections for next mayor, the fire broke out. The main concern was the overall decay in infrastructure and services within the capital.

Romans refer to the bridge’s length of 131 metres (143 yards) as “Ponte di Ferro” (NYSE:), because most bridges in Rome are made from stone.

Officials stated that the fire did not cause any injuries and was easily visible as the flames shot towards the night sky.

According to media reports, it was possibly started by a short-circuit in the shacks beneath the bridge. The fire was extinguished by firefighters in the middle of the night.

The electricity was out for many hours in areas around the area.

Due to safety checks, the bridge that was used by busy traffic between both neighbourhoods was temporarily closed.
